This is the feel good story of the year so far. A Reddit group of average traders literally decided to band together and fuck over large hedge funds taking matters into their own hands to shape the future of GameStop and make some extra cash doing so.

So what exactly happened? A group of average people with an interest in trading stocks discovered how large hedge funds were shorting the company GameStop who have been in dire straits for some time. Shorting stock is essentially a “bet” on the stock price continuing to fall and is usually a very risky bet. The Reddit group I assume felt the short was unfair and decided to take action by buying up GameStop stock among themselves driving up the price of the stock and making the hedge funds lose their short sell bets in turn costing some funds a $14 billion loss in one day of trading.

Other traders wanted to jump on the bandwagon in an attempt to make a quick buck on the rise of the stock price but the major consumer trading companies like Robinhood, E-Trade and TD Ameritrade prevented traders from buying the stock. Why is this is a big problem? Basically the way the big players in the stock market make tins of money is short selling. They already have the big money and can take on some risk. The average trader cannot do this as it is extremely risky. You can technically lose an infinite amount of money shorting stock. But, on the flip side if the stock is rising and people want to buy in hoping to make quick cash even buying a few shares they could potentially double their investment in a situation like this one. But… the powers that be “The Machine” these Redditors were Raging against decided to arbitrarily put a stop to the average Joe traders buying the stock. This is not only unfair, but unethical and shows the rules of the game are rigged in favor for the Wall Street Elites. The same adage we see played over time and time again, The Rich get Richer, the Poor get Poorer.
